Avicenna PPI TF Position Paper
The "Nothing about us without us" principle is often overlooked in biomedical research and innovation. Technologists traditionally try to innovate without involving the very people they aim to help, thereby overlooking the opportunity to tailor project outcomes to the beneficiaries’ specific needs through early involvement, such as, Public and Patient Involvement (PPI).
PPI can bring patient relevance, foster technology adoption, reduce costs, and accelerate research translation. The Avicenna Alliance (AA) has established a PPI task force to address the lack of PPI for in silico medicine. While PPI has gained momentum in the wider biomedical community, AA members have shown low awareness and limited support for implementing PPI. The task force aims to create awareness, support implementation, and enable a culture change within the in silico medicine community to maximise societal impact together with patients and the public. This position paper shall serve as a beacon for establishing the PPI task force within the AA and beyond.
