Cardiovascular diseases in children

Health-e-Child (HeC, www.health-e-child.org) delivered a platform for paediatrics, through which clinicians are able to run computing intensive tools such as the CaseReasoner, a decision support system, allowing to simultaneously filter data and look for similarities across populations of patients, and CardioViz which enables the rapid personalisation of the patient’s heart specificities, allowing doctors to simulate the effects of heart surgery and overall cardiovascular function over time. Building upon these pioneering implementations, the Sim-e-Child (SeC) project developed the first grid-enabled trans-Atlantic platform for large-scale simulations in paediatric cardiology.

The SeC/HeC heart modelling capabilities have been validated on an FDA clinical trial database, while two new tools have been developed, namely the “Cardiac Hemodynamics Computation” tool, useful to simulate and analyze the blood hemodynamics within a child’s heart and the ascending aorta and aortic arch, and the SciPort, an online facility for sharing scientific experiments, providing users with a multi-site, Web-accessible database of SeC’s paediatric cardiology data.

The outcomes of these two projects are now being validated within the Cardioproof project (www.cardioproof.eu), which applies the developed modelling tools to Aortic valve disease (AVD) and aortic coarctation (CoA) through ad hoc clinical trials, and the MD-Paedigree project (www.md-paedigree.eu), which further builds on these tools in correlation with big data usage in paediatric cardiomyopathies.
