Avicenna Alliance Advocates for Harmonized In Silico Regulation in Brazil

On October 4th, the Avicenna Alliance launched a mission to Brazil, aiming to advocate for the harmonization of legislation on digital evidence and in silico simulations in medical product regulation. The delegation engaged with key stakeholders in Brasília, including the Brazilian Parliament and ANVISA, highlighting the transformative role of in silico technologies in enhancing regulatory efficiency, reducing development costs and timelines, and improving patient safety.

Avicenna representatives Luiz Ladeira, Martha de Cunha Maluf-Burgman, Marc Horner, and Priscilla Lemes presented the case for global alignment in regulatory standards. They emphasized the benefits of using computational models in the development of medicines and medical devices—ranging from reduced reliance on animal testing to more targeted and effective clinical trials.

The session featured academic contributions, notably from Professor Dr. Hugo Luiz Oliveira (UNICAMP), who showcased his in silico model of the Wheatley valve, and Professor Dr. João Lameu da Silva (UFABC), who underscored the academic support for harmonized regulation. The visit was organized in coordination with ABIMED and supported by key local contributors.

Following the advocacy in Brasília, the delegation traveled to São Paulo, engaging with students and faculty at UFABC during two academic events. These sessions promoted in silico medicine and fostered collaboration with Brazil’s academic community.

This mission marks a pivotal step in building international partnerships to advance the adoption of in silico technologies. The Avicenna Alliance and VPH Institute remain committed to global collaboration for safer, more efficient healthcare innovation.
