Abstract:

The emergence of in silico oncology as a paradigm of generic in silico medicine and its evolution over the past two decades. Personalized treatment optimization and clinical trial simulation will be addressed through exemplary cases in which the In Silico Oncology and In Silico Medicine Group, National Technical University of Athens has played a pivotal role. Several examples of cancer models and technologically integrated oncosimulators will be presented. A large range of clinical problems, including several tumour types, both solid and hematological, and diverse treatment modalities will be addressed from the in silico oncology and more broadly in silico medicine perspective. All major in silico modelling approaches will be exemplified, including mechanistic multiscale modelling, artificial intelligence, advanced biostatistics and their hybridizations. Particular emphasis will be put on in silico psycho-oncology and in silico oncological psychiatry and more broadly in silico clinical psychology and in silico psychiatry. Results from numerous projects funded either solely or jointly by the European Commission, the National Cancer Institute (USA) and a Japanese university will be presented. Extrapolations to the expected future evolution of in silico oncology and more broadly in silico medicine will also be made.

Short bio:

G. Stamatakos is the founder and director of the In Silico Oncology and In Silico Medicine Group, ICCS-SECE-NTUA. He holds an MSc degree in electrical engineering from NTUA, an MSc degree in bioengineering from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK, and a Ph.D. degree in physics (biophysics) from NTUA.
